"Rich Bitch" trope

Personally I never knew there was a word for these labels. I noticed that the same type of stereotypical characters would be used over and over again but its pretty cool knowing that there is a name for all of these roles. With that being said, I will be pointing out the "Rich Bitch" trope in the 2004 movie, White Chicks.

First off, the movie is about these two twins, Tiffany and Brittany Wilson, who are very very rich because of their fathers billion dollar cruise line business. Two cops, played by the Wayans Bros, are supposed to take the twins to the Hamptons for this modeling event, with the task of making sure nothing wrong happens. Ironically enough, they brought there poodle, which already is the first trait of this trope. The twins were as rude as people could get and didn't show the officers any respect whatsoever. On the way to the airport, the group gets in a car accident that leaves the twins with little cuts on their faces which absolutely devastated the two woman. As little as the cuts were, and without any understanding that there was no preventing the accident, which was caused by the poodle, the twins told the officers that they were going to tell their boss how terrible of a job they were doing. The movie goes on and on with the officers playing the twins but that is not a part of this trope.

Taking a look at how the trope is applied, you could see it right away with the dynamic trio of characteristics in a "Rich Bitch." First, her Daddy is a billionaire that spoils them and lets them buy anything they want in this world. Second, the magnificent poodle. We all know that in order to complete this character, the girl needs to have this poodle. Third, the girls are snobs and are rude to everyone in sight. These three things complete the Rich Bitch Trope at whole.

The Rich Bitch trope supports the ideology that the money turns people into this. The money made these girls evil because their characters hit a 360 when they find out that Daddy is actually broke in the end. It supports the ideology that every girl with a rich parent, is going to be rude and is going to be a spoiled snob. They allow the money to control them and manipulate them into thinking they are better than everyone else. This Trope/character will continue to be used in story telling because people already understand why this character does the things they do and it allows story telling to focus on the story being told rather than the story telling the background the character has. This movie was the first thing that came to mind when reading on the Rich Bitch.

  1. White Chicks is one of my favorite comedies to watch to get laugh. I think the way the Wayans Brothers portray the 'rich bitch' trope is entirely spot on even if it's not accurate. While I never thought about it the film certainly is not shy away from showing viewers what rich girls tend act like- even though we cannot over generalize and say they all act this way.
